  • Lost Tabs – HELP!

Posted by Gerry Bimm on October 26, 2005 at 7:44 pm

I have totally lost my tabs for Effects and Favorites. When I start FCP they are missing from my windows layout and I can’t seem to get them back. The only way I can access effects is by clicking on the effects button at the top of my screen, but I want to have tabs in my browser because they are easier to get to. Double clicking doesn’t work…this is very frustrating! We’ve recently upgraded from 4.5 to 5, but so far I am not impressed…any ideas?

Have you tried Effects under the Windows menu?

Yes…clicking on it only brings the drop-down menu, but does not create a new tab in the browser.

There doesn’t seem to be anything specific to tabs in the user prefs…what should be trashed?…or is a reboot of the system needed?

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCPro & FCExpress.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/

This is one FCP tip that has helped in hundreds of “odd” problems.

Well, I’ve quit FCP, done a restart, and the effects tab is still nowhere to be found…I’ll trash things and see what happens…thanks!

What about clicking on the arrange windows button and see if it changes things around. Sometimes your effects tab gets diconnected from the window and the arrange button puts it back in its normal position.

Check underneath your other windows. If it is hiding there you can drag it back to the browser.

This happened to me once. I used the “arrange” under the windows tab on the top menu to reset everything and it came back.
