  • Lost Media in FCP 4.5

Posted by Travis Paulding on July 11, 2005 at 2:44 pm

I have read some other threads and they don’t apply here. I am using a PB G4 1.7, 1.5 Gig RAM, 100 GB internal, 160 GB LaCie External, just so you know.

Twice last Friday I had media go offline and “disappear” from my external. It was two different clips each time but stored in the same folder. Fortunately both times I was able to recapture the missing files in about 10 minutes but I am about to start a much bigger project that I am picking up after all the media has been digitized, so I don’t have the luxury of recapturing if something disappears. Does anyone know what causes this? I had not shut down or moved the computer or external when this happened either time. The computer MAY have gone to sleep in that time frame but that is the only thing that I can think of.

In the mean time I am going to repair permissions, delete FCP prefs, yada yada yada. Please help!

Ensure that your Energy Settings do not allow the harddrive to sleep on the machine. major no no with an FCP system.

Ensure that your media drives are clean and not fragmented.

Im only about 3 months into my Mac career, so pardon this potentially stupid question. What is the best way to clean and defrag a Mac HD? I know very well about the utilities in XP and I know about permissions in Mac, but what else?

    Thanks!

Should I not let the computer go to sleep when FCP is open? How should I set this in my system prefs? Obviously, since I am using a PB at this time, when I shut it it sleeps. I just need to know when to do what. I assume it is ok to let the computer and HDs sleep when FCP isnt being used.

    Thanks again

The best way to defrag a media drive is to erase it completely. I do this periodically with all my media drives.

This happened to a few people that i know of in 4.1, including myself, a couple of times. I don’t know that anyone ever discovered a cause, but it hasn’t happened to me since 4.5.

Disk Warrior works very nice, but if you use it with media on your drives, you may break the link to them. Best to completely erase your drive as often as possible. I try not to go more than three months without erasing my media drives.

[Travis Paulding] “Should I not let the computer go to sleep when FCP is open?”

The harddrive should NEVER go to sleep with an FCP system. The monitor can go to sleep, but not the harddrive.

Just to into your System Preferences, Energy Settings, and make sure the check box at the bottom is off (put the harddrive to go sleep….)
