Lost Media Drive/Scratch Disk ???
Posted by Antonio Atzei on June 23, 2007 at 1:50 amIs it possible?
I`ve just turned on the Mac this morning and I see this strange message, saying that the scratch disks couldn`t be located.. Very strange I thought. Then I try to locate the disck but I couldn`s see it anyway. I quit from fcp and look at my screen and notice that the icon for the media/scratch disk was missing. There and then I hoped for an icon missing, but when I went inside aplications etc… the media drive/scratch disk it`s gone walk about as they say aroung here!
This means what?
1- I`ve lost everything
2- I nedd to take the mac to a service centre
3- start screaming
PS When I turn it on I noticed a strange clicking noise never heard before… maybe the clicks were only in my brain .. ha ha ha
Rds.

June 23, 2007 at 2:18 amTypically, a clicking sound from your hard drive means it’s very dead. The clicking is usually the sound of the read/write head in the drive banging on the platter & gouging the surface where your data used to reside.
You should plan on replacing this drive. You should not plan on ever recovering any data from this drive.
OTOH, if this is an external drive with a fan, it might only be that the fan’s clicking and your cable is loose.

I apologise for the late reply, but after the bad news or suspicion of bad news I decided to go for a long drive. Oh well .. very strange though that a drive wouldn`t last very long time

There are millions of hard drives manufactured each year, lots of them fail for whatever reason. this is why you MUST backup your media at all times, especially if you’re earning money from your work. I had two brand new 5bay SATA arrays go south in a span of two months. With each failure I was able to keep working because I have a LaCie 2TB FW800 array strictly for backup.
Can’t say it enough on here especially with the cheap price of FW drives these days. Backup all your most important media.

Or any serious reseller as they ones I deal with they`ll be able to suggest what they think it`s best right?

Not really. Seagate, Hitatchi and Western Digital seem to be the main drives of choice out there. I don’t run with internal storage myself as I only run external in all our suites. I’m sure if you do a search on this forum for hard drives you’ll find a lot of suggestions.
Or go to Peter Wiggins website and look at his blog entry about installing four drives inside his new Mac Pro. He’s a firm believer in internal storage so whatever he used there is probably a safe bet.

One of the SATA arrays we’re testing does have some Hitachi drives in there but I don’t pay attention to the model number or anything as those are pre-configured systems.
I was just saying that Hitachi, Seagate and Western Digital seems to be the popular choices when people ask on these forums what to buy.
