Ok so one day I had 40some Gigs free space on my desktop, and the next day it went down to 9 gigs.. What happened? How can I fix that and get my lost gigs back?

    hello…

this is nearly impossible to answer, unfortunately… :-/

unless there is a very obscure bug in the os, that’s an awful lot to just have disappear. what happens when you open a shell and run “df -h” (sans quotes)? does it jive with the missing space that the gui says is gone? and if so, i’d check to see if you have any rogue processes going on that are saving large chunks of data on a regular basis…
