  • Lost files and re-syncing footage

    Hi there,

Normally I follow a pretty strict back up system but as you know, the one time I didn’t, I’ve ended up losing the hard drive (think it’s called Sod’s Law).

In a nutshell, I’ve pretty much finished an edit in Vegas Pro 9 but need to make some tweaks. However, the original source files of my footage, captured direct from camera, have been lost on the broken hard drive (dropped just two feet onto floor!!)

I have the original footage still on tape and wondered if anyone knew of the best way of syncing up my existing edits, project etc with the footage off the tape if I go through the import footage options again.

If Vegas can re-import the footage and sync it back to the project as is, it will definitely be getting a major pat on the back from me!!

Thanks in advance for any help / advice.

    Matt

    Firstly,
During your editing, did you save any Vegas file of your work?

If you had saved a Vegas project file, you could easily re-import the
footage to a hard drive and when you open the Vegas project file,
Vegas would tell you that the footage is missing…there you
simply direct it to find the file you just re-imported and all
    should be well….

    Hi Steve,

Yes, I do have the Vegas file on my desktop so all good there. So, if I re-import all the footage off the tapes onto a new drive, open the Vegas project and point it to the new files, Vegas will automatically re-sync it all so all my edits, effects, etc etc remain unchanged?

If so, that’s amazing and may have saved my bacon on this particular time sensitive project!

    GREAT….
From once you have that vegas project file, You are
    good to go.
Just point vegas in the right direction and all should
    fall into place.
For an easier handle, try make sure the files you re-import
    are named as before (etc).

Hey thanks Steve. Do I have to point the same captured clip to the exact same clip in the timeline or will Vegas recognise the footage or something? I only ask because the newly imported shots will have different names to the original so how do I know where to point them?

    Many thanks again
