Lossless splitting of large files – FCP? Mpeg StreamClip?
I’m capturing SD tapes into DV files – editing in FCP; archiving raw footage to DVDs. But some of the files are too big for a DVD.
Will it work to break up the big files into FCP subclips?
OR – split the big files with Mpeg StreamClip by selecting a section with in and out points and then exporting it?I’m assuming I should export to DV, not Quicktime or Mpeg.
When I do export to DV, the resulting file is a little smaller than the original – for example, an original 5 second clip that’s 19.1 MB becomes 18 MB when it’s exported to DV. Does this mean the new clip is slightly more compressed?Any suggestions on a better way to do this?
Log and capture in sections may be the way…..Thank you in advance!

not sure why you are getting the file size discrepancy,
but if you are editing in FCP, you should export from FCP.
export as QuickTime movie, SAME SETTINGS
this will give you no re-compression.also you should create these smaller files BEFORE YOU EDIT
and then use the smaller file to edit with.otherwise you will have terrible issues reconnecting to your archived material.
log & capture in smaller sections might be a way to go.
i prefer capturing whole tapes, then doing a batch export or a Media Manage operation overnight.nick

Archive your DV files to a Hard Drive (either RAID 1 or 2 separate hard drives). DV files are very small compared to HD ProRes Files.

Would it work for you to just go to the halfway point of the timeline, mark the out point, go to the front and mark in, and just export half the show to the MPEG2 target, then go back and export the second half, with a little overlap or “handles” at the in point? Or if keeping to DV, you would export Master tape 5, part A, Master tape 5, Part B”, and burn two DVD’s from that?
Also, what about BluRay? You don’t need heavy authoring to burn dubs to bluray right off your FCP timeline and BD has significantly more room on it than even a double-layer DVD.

i think the OP is using the DVDs as an *archive* medium.
backing up 4.5 gigs of DV at a time.i suspect DV tapes would have a better chance of long-term survival than DVD disks.

another thought, (if you want to go ahead with this)
media managing the tapes into smaller chunks may be a better bet,
you will preserve the original metadata that allows you to run DV start-stop detect.media manger can be tricky when reducing tapes into smaller chunks as you have to leave a 2 frame gap between adjacent grabs, otherwise MM will not split them.
you will get 1 frame back after the MM! i cant remember if it;s on the head or the tailif you need every frame, you have to Media Mange every second chunk
so you’d do the “odds’ then come back and do the “evens”nick
