Is there a reasonable solution yet? It would be nice to save half of my drive space w/o quality loss.

PhotoJPEG @ 75% is for all practical purposes, lossless – and I’d be fine using that. But it’s pretty much useless because Final Cut 5 still seems to purposly prevent any RT Effects with this codec. Even a simple dissolve causes a red render bar. I can only think that Apple was trying to be nice and not pour salt on the wounds after hurting the MJPEG hardware based capture card makers. Now with Cinewave defunct, you’d think they’d have fixed this totally pointless limitation which is probably nothing but a single line of code that translates into “No, You Can’t Do That!”

What really gets me is that if you put a JPEG clip into an Uncompressed 8-bit sequence, then you get an orange RT Extreme bar for playback and all basic effects – and they play back just fine on my dual 2.5ghz without stuttering or anything like that. Of course I could just use that worflow, but then I’d have to render every single clip before mastering to tape.

Try the DV50 codec (its much better than its DV25 cousin)….it looks great and will save you a ton of drive space. You get RT effects galore.

I use DV50 for a lot of things. I’m talking about a lossless codec, which DV50 is definately not.

Apple’s non-support of PhotoJPEG is endlessly frustrating. PhotoJPEG in HD would allow 1920 X 1080P at about 4 MB/s.

I don’t know why they don’t play ball.
