Is a print to video from an SD timeline lossless? ie. SD NTSC timeline to a DVCAM deck

I’m looking to get unaltered files back on tape – no scaling – no color correction – nothing – if i drop the original files on a timeline and print to tape – will they essentially be identical to those I originally pulled off the tape?

What about exporting a Quicktime file with “current settings”? is that also lossless?

What about exporting using Compressor – but selecting the same settings as timeline? On this note, I need to export a sequence created in 1080/60i – which of the above methods is lossless or avoids recompressing to give me best version of my uncompressed HDV timeline?

[Jason O’Hara] “Is a print to video from an SD timeline lossless? ie. SD NTSC timeline to a DVCAM deck “

Yes. A pure data transfer of 1’s and 0’s. Because you are using a firewire connection. If you sent out a video signal like Component or Composite, then there’d be some slight loss.

[Jason O’Hara] ” if i drop the original files on a timeline and print to tape – will they essentially be identical to those I originally pulled off the tape? “

Unless you added any filters…yes, they are exactly like you pulled them from the tape. identical to the camera originals.

Yup. Just taking the data from the timeline, all the separate clips, and assembling them into a seamless QT file. Same codec, same quality.

[Jason O’Hara] “What about exporting using Compressor – but selecting the same settings as timeline?”

    Nope…NOW you are recompressing.

FIle>Export>Quicktime movie. Using Sequence Settings, do not recompress.

If you are printing to DVCam, somewhere your picture must be converted to DV.
If you make the conversion in the computer, then thsi file can be printed without further re-compression.
You need to make the 1080>DV conversion trying to keep the most possible quality.
Compressor will be good to get a proper downscaling.
