Lossless Compression Quick Test
Old news to most of you here I’m sure, but every so often I need to prove things to myself, so I ran a bunch of lossless (and “mostly lossless”) compression tests the other morning. I have a full analysis of my (sloppy) methodology and (rant-filled) conclusions here, but I think this graph does the best job summarizing what I found:

Two surprises for me: the venerable, decade old HuffYUV codec still rocks and QuickTime + PNG is an unmitigated crippled disaster limping along well behind everyone else.Others have performed more detailed and more sciencey tests that are certainly better and more objective (and 129 pages longer) than my quick tests, but I think my results should be interesting in a pragmatic way, since I used real-world editing software to perform the renders. Vegasites might specifically be interested to see some of the 50% CPU utilization strangeness I found with QuickTime (and QT in general in Windows).
