Loss of color sync in Tricaster to FCP workflow
Hello everyone,
I work with the Tricaster Studio out in the field w/ a muti-cam setup and I’ve run into a very annoying problem when editing:
First of all, I’m not sure the Tricaster and Apple FCP 6.0.4 mix very well in general because the Tricaster will only render .mov files at 640×480 resolution that look horrible when editingin full NTSC resolution in FCP. Our work-around for this is to render from the Tricaster into an .avi file at full (720×480) resolution.
Of course we get a warning when importing said file- the .avi is not optimized for FCP. However, it seems to work fine except for one problem: with fast motion or a cut between cameras, there is a ‘ghost’ color image separate from the luma that is left over for one frame. It’s difficult to see playing the vid realtime, but it’s definitely there and noticeable. I’ve uploaded a couple of screen captures so you can see the problem.
Any ideas what’s the deal with this? I imagine it’s the .avi encoding not optimized for FCP? Many of these shoots are long large files (2hrs- 20+ GB) that take days to ‘optimize’ in FCP so I stopped trying that. Should I go back to exporting to QT from the Tricaster? I dont understand why you can only export in 640×480 for QT and 720×480 for .avi
Very frustrating- any advice is greatly appreciated. Oh yes, one more thing- our cameras aren’t very great (Cannon XL-1) but I don’t think they are the primary culprit
Thanks,
Josh
