Losing render files.
Posted by Jon Felix on November 5, 2012 at 4:53 amJust finished my first complicated PP edit – many layers – lots of AE work. I have to say I am rather underwhelmed by the slowness of the programme, the many bugs (that bloody title tool!), but most of all by the fact that every time you quit PP, it loses all the render files. You have to re-render everytime you open the project again. Unacceptable!
Anyone have any ideas about this?
I honestly wish I had done the edit on my old FCP7 – it would have been much quicker and crashed less.

November 5, 2012 at 4:57 amJust found this from Michael Brassert ..
I just asked Adobe about this and they said you must rerender your preview files every time you open PP. I wonder why all of the preview files are saved in folders if you can never link to them. I suppose there is a logical explanation for this but I see it just as a PIA. The more quirks like this I find the more I miss FCP7 and all the simplicity I took for granted.
Quite.

I am surprised they said this since I have never found this to be the case. But I must admit sometimes it loses one or two that I might have previously rendered . It seemed like a bug to me. Very random.

November 5, 2012 at 8:45 pmYes…losing preview files is not normal.
I’m not sure who at Adobe would have said this, but it would be news to me…
Where are your preview files going? Most often on a Mac, PPro loses track of either media cache files or preview files because or permissions issues…

November 6, 2012 at 6:04 pmThanks for your input Tim. To answer your question, the preview files were being saved in a folder (that PP created) in the master folder for the project on a raided drive connected by Thunderbolt.
I have tried changing the location for preview files to a folder on my main Mac drive: it did not help.
One possible clue is another odd bug with this software … I always manage to save the project just fine. And I save it before quitting (ie. I do not quit and wait for it to ask me if I want to save first). When I quit – at least half of the time, the software crashes out (rather than quit) with a ‘serious problem’ (or whatever the wording was) error. Maybe this is the problem – although I would have thought that by successfully saving before this happened – the preview files would be safe and findable.
In any case the preview files are lost even when this does NOT happen.
Is there a way of reconnecting the preview files manually (like in FCP)?
Cheers

November 6, 2012 at 6:43 pmIf Premiere Pro is launching the project, but not asking you to point it at the preview files (the project should know that they’re missing), then there is something funky about how this process is happening.
When you launch the project, does the project ask you where a bunch of files with long, nonsensical names are?

November 6, 2012 at 11:22 pmHi TimK,
We have been using PP 5.5.2 for some 12 months and sometimes it takes say 30-60 sec to re-render files automatically, but not all the time.
There may be some lag time in loading all files in say a 2 hour production but it does so fairly quickly in our Dell Precision T5500.
It would be nice to get rid of this issue, it does not happen in Sony Vegas ?

November 25, 2012 at 3:20 pmIf ti happens to me I wait until PP thinks all media are loaded and the i close the program all2gether by clicking the close window X on PP. If i reopen it the renderfiles seem to be back again. I the save it.
Dont close the project, close the program if it happens.
