  • Losing reel number on re-capture

Posted by Terry Losardo on July 10, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Background: I have to update a couple of shows I edited on a prior FCP workstation (FCP v 3.02) That system captured Beta footage through an analog-digital converter and a Digital Voodoo D1 Desktop card.

I have no problem seeing the Voodoo footage on my new system when I set the sequence to a Digital Voodoo codec. But because I’ve shot new Beta footage, and the Voodoo stuff looks bad compared to newer Kona captures, I want to recapture all my original clips through the Kona onto my new system.

Problem: No matter how I try to recapture the clips, on capture, they lose their reel number. The new clip shows up just fine on the timeline and in the bin, but no reel number.

I’ve tried straight recapture, Media Managing to an offline project, exporting a batch list, dragging the original clips from the drive into the new system and batch capturing. Every time, the reel number gets lost.

I’m trying to avoid having to key in all the in and out points etc. Since I may have to edit these shows again later, I want the new project to be as complete as possible (ie, reel numbers in the Browser).

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks
    Terry

I see that my system info didn’t attach on the first post. Here it is:

Dual 2.5GHZ PowerMac G5, Kona 2 card, 2.5GB RAM, Ensemble Design A-D and D-A converters, Flying Cow, Apple 3.5TB XRAID, OS 10.4, FCP v5.04.

Have you tried exporting an EDL from the old system, & importing that into the newer one? How about an XML export for each timeline in an old project?

Another option, is to export a separate batch list for each reel.

Trashing prefs has worked for now. Note – besides the disappearing reel number, the problem also included the clip’s time code numbers spontaneously resetting to zero in the Browser after capture. This happened on any capture I tried.

    Thanks for input.
