I just read that Lord Snowdon has died in London at the age of 86.

Snowdon (and his pre-royal moniker Antony Armstrong-Jones) was one of my favorite photographers, especially portraits… often they were really hauntingly beautiful. From royals to everyday people, he really knew how to shoot faces.

I remember as a teenager reading in a photographic magazine an interview with him where I learned that he had NO lighting instruments at all in his London studio, just a northern skylight. Although his portrait lighting was phenomenal, he did it all reflectively and subtractively with available light. I doubt that was true of all his portraiture that he did elsewhere, but apparently that was the case in his studio. Really good stuff.

If you’re not familiar with his life or his work, give his photos an image-search Google….

Bit easier to get models, I suspect, when you have a royal title…

“Madam, his Lordship finds your visage appealing and was wondering if you’d be amenable to dropping by the palace to sit for a photographic portrait – at your convenience of course?”

Kinda beats trolling bars with a DSLR!

(just teasing – he did seam to have a fine eye for light from what I remember of his work.)
