Looking to expand my microphone arsenal
Hey guys,
I’ve been looking to upgrade my current hardware using money I’ve made from my quickly growing videography business, and just wanted some assurance that I’m headed in the right direction.
I prefer to own my own equipment because my shooting schedule is always changing. I do mostly interviews, inspirational videos, and local commercials but I also like to produce the occasional short film for local festivals and for fun.
Currently I own two Sennheiser lavaliers that I use for interviews and shots where it’s okay to see the mic. I’d like to invest in two new mid-range microphones that would suit my needs for indoor and outdoor dialogue in short films, and I’ve narrowed my choices down to the Rode NTG-3 for outdoor and the Oktava Mk-012 for indoor.
Would these two microphones be appropriate for what I’m trying to do? Obviously a day will come when I can purchase more expensive microphones, but as a college student I’m just looking to get the best for the money I have.

Not a bad choice but be aware that the Oktava is known for handling noise issues when used on a boom pole. A very pliant shock mount is required to keep the noise at a minimum.

Are there any alternatives to the Oktava that are similar in sound quality but don’t have the handling noise issue?

No. Look at the Audio Technica AT4053b and Audix SCX-1 HC.

Thanks so much for your suggestions, Ty. In your opinion, would a Rode NTG-3 be better paired with the Audix SCX1HC or the Audio Technica AT4053b? Is the difference in sound between the two worth the price difference?

I have not done those comparisons, so I can’t really say.
I’d offer that the SCX-1 HC is flatter than the AT4053b, which has a bit of a HF peak on it.

I have a few of these and they are very versatile, easy to handle, and just a great sounding mike. Get a nice shock mount with them. I have used them for dialog and at this forums advice to mike guitars and the sound recorded was great.

Though the included mike clip does do a decent job as well.
Have not used the Audix SCX1HC but the AT is only $100 more.
