  • Looking to buy a new FCP system

Posted by David Spitzer on December 22, 2007 at 12:38 am

I want to purchase a FCP HD system before the end of the year – any recommendations on where to purchase? any good deals/rebates? I have a quote from Apple with a small biz 8% discount not much of a starting place. They offer a black magic card and not a Kona – are there strong opinions about that? Or is a separate hardware unit the way to go? I assume I need FC Studio 2 and something like 8 GB. I have a JVC GY-HD 250 camera and know there can be compatibility problems… Do I need to get a Kona3 card? Please see this post below. I know there are many variables but some high level advice and the suggestion of a salesperson/place to buy is much appreciated. THANK YOU

Is your firewire cable plugged in for camera control? Is so, you may try removing it. We’re not FCP or JVC 250 experts (just got both and have zero experience) but had a similar problem. Turns out we were capturing thru the Firewire port.

We got the AJA Kona 3 and BAM! It looks AMAZING! But we had to do the following to make it work:

    1. Put the Kona in the 3rd slot on the G5. Would not work anywhere else.

    2. Deinstall / reinstall the Kona drivers

    3. Test the camera to the Kona Utility (with FCP closed)

    4. Set the frame rate / format in the Kona Utility

    5. THEN and only then open FCP. Set formats to match the Kona.

Worked when we followed these steps, failed when we didn’t. Could not possibly be happier with the video quality or sharpness of the camera. Everyone who sees it is amazed.

    Don’t rush this purchase.
If you do not know the differences between the various capture systems, do not rush to spend your money.
If you need to make capital expenses for tax reasons, talk to your accountant FIRST. Take a bottle of wine over to her house and ask her for a few minutes of her holiday time. You may be able to make capital expenditures up to April 15 but I DO NOT KNOW IF THAT IS TRUE FOR YOUR CASE and to listen to me when it comes to your taxes would be, umm, stupid.
If you don’t have an accountant, don’t spend the money.

Generally, I suggest people who have money to spend carefully work backwards from what they think they need to deliver, not what they’re producing with now. Figure out how you are going to be making your money and equip yourself to do those chores efficiently. Everything else will sort of fall into place later.

Buying toys to support out of date camera hardware or loading up a system that cannot support new production formats would be a shame.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
