  • Looking for real world experience with FW800 external drives

In the next couple of days, I will be buying a firewire 800 external raid for a quad G5 with 2.5G of ram. I will be using it with all formats (SD and HD, Pal and NTSC), but was hoping to get realtime playback with uncompressed SD. Is this a realistic expectation. I am considering the Gtech or the OWC raids. Thanks!

I’ve use the G-Tech Raids for uncompressed SD… works like a charm. I really like these drives because they are very quiet, and they always use Hitachi drives inside, so you are getting the fastest, and the most reliable without a worry…

One of the suites here uses a 1.5TB FW800 raid. I cannot say it’s been ‘problemless’ (a new word for Webster) but they do work. Don’t expect much if you are editing 10 bit uncompressed SD. If you are going HD, you will only be able to edit compressed (DVCPRO HD or HDV). Compressed HD and 8 bit Uncompressed SD work just dandy on FW800. It’s the lack of redundancy that might bite you when you least expect it. If you are looking for faster storage, maybe you should check into a SATA solution, but again, the lack of redundancy can get ya. This lack of redundancy has been talked about and argued up and down this forum and others, the only thing I have to say about it is that the people that argue FOR a lack of redundancy have never had a drive fail on them in the 11th hour. There are some SATA solutions out there that are starting to offer redundancy. I would look at a VAR that can sell you the package, so you get support when something goes awry. Someone like ProMax might be a good place to start. If you do decide that FW800 is they way for you, GTech makes really nice products.

I’ve been using a G-Tech 800Gb for about a year now with flawless results. Nice unit! My 2
