Looking for opinions
Posted by Russell Hill on September 21, 2005 at 4:52 pmI know that it would be a good idea to upgrade the OS but do I need to upgrade to Tiger to run FCP 5. I am running Panther now. What are some pros and cons?

I think that with your rather dated MAC the benefits are not nearly as great as they might be with newer hardware.

September 21, 2005 at 7:29 pmDavid, Thanks for the reply. I know my signature had some old info in it. I have a new Dual G5 with 2GB of RAM. and running OSX 10.3.9. Do you still have the same opinion?

September 21, 2005 at 8:48 pmI would update to Tiger. Troubleshooting mixes of old and new software can sometimes be a nightmare. Your hardware is new enough to not be a problem and you’ll get a lot more help on these forums (and other troubleshooting sites) by running the same OS and FCP that most of us are.
New features like Spotlight, Smart folders, core audio & video, Automator, etc are all great. For a list of what’s new/better in Tiger you can checkout Apple’s web page on it here: https://www.apple.com/macosx/
Basically, there are two ways to go in my opinion: 1) Don’t upgrade anything and keep your original system as is (assuming it was working well when originally installed). 2) Keep all software current, upgrade as soon as you know that the latest version is not causing problems for most early adopters (This includes all firmware, drivers, system software, and applications). The second one will involve some challenges and possibly some occasional downtime, but its my preferred choice in most cases. It will pay off in the long run since you’ll always be familiar with current techniques and features, so you’ll avoid a challenging learning curve later when you eventually buy new equipment & software. Plus the new features/bug fixes gained with regular updates are often well worth any minor upgrade headaches.

Nope, that changes everything… You should undoubtedly move to Tiger and FCP 5 as soon as possible, without passing go and without collecting $200…
