I have a customer who has a lot of VHS tapes where the video has “tearing” in it. I’m not sure if I’m using the correct term. There are small black horizontal lines coming out of the various images on the screen. They are more prevalent as the image gets hotter. Hopefully, I’m describing it correctly.
I was just hoping to be able to give my customer a good explanation.
The video was shot on a home VHS camcorder and I believe they transferred the video from a small tape to a larger VHS.
Any info anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,

Sounds like “tearing” to me. My understanding is that this can be caused by a number of factors, but the usual is from luma or chroma levels that exceed 110 IRE (Maximum white on NTSC should not exceed 100 IRE) It may also be caused by “head clogging” due to dirt in the video playback or record device.

Hopefully a hard-core engineer can give you better information, but that was what I heard back when I was a tape op.
