  • Looking for ideas on “Organic Transitions”

I would like to use Spicemaster Pro as a last resort, but I am looking for good ideas on how to make some interesting
organic transitions for a cooking show that don’t fall into the category of overly used and abused transitions.
Can anyone give me some ideas? If you have any ideas, I would like some pointers on how to acheive these organic
    transitions? Thanks

I’m one of those guys who believes in cuts and dissolves. But that’s me. 🙂

In my opinion, the best transitions hit you by surprise, when one scene becomes another scene when you thought you were just in the first scene. Say, when you fly out of a scene and end up pulling out of an eyeball. Or something like that, but less overdone. There was an animated Volkswagen Golf spot that changed scenes brilliantly. Psyop did it, I think. But those transitions are more complex, and probably completely unrelated to your problem.

With shot footage, good transitions can relate directly to the content and are planned in advance. Say, if your soup is steaming, you tilt up through the steam and into the large white ceiling fixture. hah! Then you dissolve into a shot of the white milk boiling or whatever. Also probably unrelated to your problem.

So I guess my point might be … if you can’t control the shots or design shots around transitions, don’t use anything other than cuts or dissolves in post. Anything else would be distracting from the content. But that’s just my opinion. 🙂

Steve makes a good point. Connections between scenes is perhaps inherent in the scenes themselves. Perhaps the most we can do is reconcile them and not get in the way of them with forced stylings.

All that being said. You might look into developing some luma mattes of various relevant content (e.g. stream, boiling liquid) shoot or synthesize a black and white clip that starts all black then changes to white (over visa versa). These can be used to make transitions from one scene to the next.

I have been toying with creating different masks and using ramp and luma mattes, I am getting some ideas. There are some interesting things that can be done with Spicemaster, but alas there is no Mac version (bummer.) I am a fan of that idea, but the director loves organic looking transitions, so I thought I would come to the best to see if some ideas could come from it. Thanks

Now don’t bite me guys, BUT…I think there are some very nice transitions within the Sapphire Plug-in set that are very organic.
