looking for good storage
Posted by Jeffrey Durkin on February 1, 2010 at 11:25 pmHello,
I know this is for FCP, but I am looking for the biggest, cheapest
best hard drives for internal use in my Mac Pro. I Have 3 drives open that I want
to dedicate to HD video editing. What brand, speed and models are the best and where can I order?
ThanksJeff

Big, best and CHEAP? Not asking for much, huh? Hitachi drives are what I swear by.

Me too!!! And, https://www.newegg.com is a good place to buy them, but I would suggest that you google Hitachi 1Tb SATA or Hitachi 1.5Tb SATA and see what you can find.

February 2, 2010 at 12:15 amBy all means, buy the cheapest Hitachi you can find, jam them in your Mac, stripe as RAID 0 and have max perfomance.
Do me a favour, don’t come back here if you have trouble.

I guarantee you once had a raid 0 without anyway to make a backup. So, why give this guy such a hard time?

February 2, 2010 at 6:19 amI bought 4 of these and made two 4 TB raid 0 sets on my Mac Pro.
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0F10311/
Transcoded a 2.5 TB movie to one set, copied to the other, and sent the original pair to Germany. (I also have all of the captured footage on smaller drives, plus the original p2 cards on 500 GB drives).
Both raid 0 sets are working great. My colleague in Germany is backing up before starting his editing. This is a great price from a great company.
I like using only 2 drives since the odds are better, and I still have another slot to swap in different drives. I also bought 4 of these and sent 2 to Germany:

And I used these to transcode the footage from my seven 500 GB drives:

It’s my subtile way of saying that “cheapest, biggest, best” is an impossible combo.
Like “cheap, fast, good, pick any two” for jobs, this also goes for hardware.
And making decisions that can ruin your biz based on what a total stranger tells you is at least a bit strange.
Get my drift?Later,

Well, actually Bouke, I don’t get your drift in this case.
Shane and I are hardly strangers to the thousands of FCP users who come here each month asking for our help. Our pictures are posted above on the forum and our profiles available for all to see, precisely so that we aren’t just strangers, and so that people will know they can trust us to give them sound and helpful advice.
In any case, SATA drives are much more robust and user friendly than the expensive SCSI drives we were using early in our careers without backup. So, if a guy wants to throw three into his MacPro and get to work, I have no issue pointing in the direction of the drives I stake my business on. It’s certainly not rocket science. And, when that same fellow can afford a Raid 5 or 6, I’ll point him in that direction when he asks.

Few points1) you emphatise the least interesting parts of my post.
(thus proving that you indeed did not get my drift 🙂
2) Even if Shane and you are top posters, and have your face up there, that does not make you a VAR who will help you in case of mayhem
3) As for Shane, i like him and do not question his competence, but i also disagree with him very often. (And i mean VERY, VERY often).
Having said that, you’re not the only ones responding, and my remark should have been taken in a more broader view.
4)I totally do not feel like adding something to answer the original question, see point 1) for that.Peace, (and out)

Bouke,
It’s the most interesting point to me, because, like many of your posts lately, this one seems very angry. Frankly, I don’t remember you that way in the past. I’ve always thought of you as that dude who creates cool and useful code to help people.
Just being honest…

February 2, 2010 at 6:38 pmThank you guys for good quality info. Many have pointed me twoard the Hitachi deskstar 7K2000 2TB.
The price is right and I plan to buy 4 of them for my Mac Pro, and another 4 for a Drobo S. That should
give me 8TB all backed up. Thank you so much for your help.Jeff
