Looking for an Animatte Plugin
Posted by Jack Bibbo on March 23, 2009 at 9:59 pmI am looking for an animatte plug in.
If you are familiar with AVID, AVID has what I find to be a VERY useful Animatte tool. I use it daily.
I have yet to find something similar in FCP, but I imagine that there has to be something out there.
8 point garbage matte are not doing it for me.
any leads are appreciated.
thanks
Jack

March 23, 2009 at 10:50 pmYeah, nothing like round-tripping to an application that is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than FCP.
This is a huge advantage Avid has over FCP. But then FCP has so many things over Avid too.
I still miss it.

March 23, 2009 at 11:14 pmYeah I know, but it really should not be. One thing that i like about FCP, among others, is it seems easier for third party folks to write plug-ins. That is why I assumed that has to be something out there.
I guess I am lucky to be able to use both platforms. But it is interesting how many facilities are phasing out AVID.
Anyway if you hear of an AniMatte plug-in out there please let me know.
If someone out there is not familiar with AniMatte in AVID, it is nothing really extraordinary, just a matte tool, unlimited points with a Bezier Curves functionality, that you can animatte. Also has the ability to multiple mattes from one efx and full feathering capabilities.
Thanks

March 23, 2009 at 11:15 pmMotion Baby. You’ve got two kinds of splines there. Bezier and B-splines.

This has been a long needed and requested (by me anyway) in FCP. As of now, you can send shots to motion, work on them there and render in the sequence if you can take the render hit. It’s a plug in of sorts. 😉
I often automatic duck to AE too.

March 24, 2009 at 12:54 amWhile that certainly is a viable option, I don’t have time to roundtrip with clients sitting in the rooms. The comps that I am doing are down and dirty, only to sell an idea. We would then do it for real with a gfx artist in their tool of choice.
The back and forth from application to application to tweak is not appealling.
However when working without clients I no issue with it all.Glad to hear other people find the tool useful.

Have you tried it? It’s no diferent than applying a plug in.
Select clips. Right click, Send to > Motion.
Work, save, and then when you tab back to FCP, the comp is updated. Render and watch.

March 24, 2009 at 2:43 amSure, but only a smidgen of feathering. I suppose the +/- 100 feathering control refers to pixels, because when I use large stills in a a Motion comp, I can only get a little bit of feather at the max setting. And the odd corner behavior (peaking) of feathered masks is annoying as heck. Oh, and you can’t set mask shape keyframes to ‘constant’ interpolation.
On the other hand, thinking of Motion as a really big plugin for FCP makes it seem way cooler than as a motion-graphics tool.
Okay, okay, I’m just venting here – sorry about the rant – but I stand by my feathering complaint. And the instability.

March 24, 2009 at 3:22 amGreat points, all of them.
AUtomatic duck with FCP and AE is the tools I use to do any matte work. That’s a pretty expensive solution, though, especially if you don’t have the Creative Suite.
By the way, you can feather the mask up to ‘1000’ if you type that value in to the feather parameter in the inspector tab of Motion.

March 24, 2009 at 2:55 pmI think you missed it on the feathering option Lars. If you click on the mask tab you can either enter a higher value or slide the value all the way up to 1000. You might want to give Motion a second chance.
