[Taylor Thompson] “I’m looking for someone who can answer my AE questions. I just got the program and am very confused.”

I would recommend going through the After Effects free introductory tutorial videos at videocopilot.net. The address is:

    https://www.videocopilot.net/basic/

Once you walk through those free lessons, then you can ask questions that the people will be able to respond to.

    Best regards,

    Ron Lindeboom

Remember: Burt Bacharach lied. What the world really needs now is an undo button.

well I finally figured out how to get the sound on the finished video to work, but it only rendered part of the video, the first 30 seconds or so are just gone….

ok I just figured that out, but what I don’t understand is my rendered files are huge, like 5 million KB. I’m not using HD video or anything.

And I have no idea how to get any of the effects to work well, effectivly.

how long is your video that it came out to 5GB? ..you are probably rendering with the default settings; try different settings in the Output Module within the Render Que. If you have no knowledge of compression technology, let me know

Take a deep breath,,, now , let it out slow,,,

When it comes to things AE, that is the ‘nature of the beast’…

The App is, to say the least, intense and filled with great functions so recognize now that it will be a lil slow at the start as AE is a professional grade tool.

The start of a comp is important,, you will need to do a ,,,
Composition > New Composition ,,, which presents a window for setting up the comp’s dimensions and length…
The length for most needs is kept to 5 to 10 seconds on a nominal computer because as you noticed the files are large and memory intensive. Also most special FX a presented as a ‘cool flash in the pan’ that gets incorporated with many cuts for narratives.
That said. check to see what your comp settings are and pay close attention to it’s length. If you see
’00:50:00:00′ ,,, that’s one long AE comp “00:00:05:00′ is a better starting point.

Once you are in the app and working with the comp, be careful of the timeline panel, off to the right is where the graphical representation of your layers are depicted. Note the Grey Bars (there are two) with two blue ends. One lives on top (for Navigation) the other is just below the numbers you see there (that’s the Work Area Bar).
These bars effect the way AE treats your comp specifically the lower of the two (Work Area) if accidentally moved will cause all kinds of problems, IF you don’t know it moved. Don’t assume it should not be moved just be aware of it and tae situation you’ve described sounds to me like any of the items I’ve mentioned are possibly the cause.

Sorry if I’m long winded or off the marjk just tring to help and am not sure how much do or do not know. Hope I am helping.

    cheers
    joe

P.S. goto the Cows’ video tutorials on AE and you’ll find very generous members teaching step by step.
