Folks one thing that is sorely missing from FCP X is a lockable mask. Does anyone have any leads to a plugin? I am trying to now have to go the compound clip route as that presents it’s own cumbersome workflow issues. I downloaded the RT (ripple training) Adjustment Layer thinking I could apply a mask to that (which I can), but it does’t allow intersecting which I need for what I am trying to do – split screen with the flexibility to move positions of my content within the mask.

I’ll go into Motion next and build a filter, but wondered if anyone had come across a pre-built utility. This is one feature I would welcome in an FCP X update.

What do you mean by locking and intersecting? Do you mean you want to be able to add a second mask to something and have it either add or subtract the contents?

    And by locking you mean?

I have some basic square or corner pin type masks that allow you to position and scale the media in the mask, and move the mask without the media moving, but they have a built in border that could be disabled.

Would using drop zones help this problem?

Bret what I mean is I’d like to be able to (on the main storyline) have a mask that is static and doesn’t move with the clip. Intersecting would allow me to see something that’s masked below. Doing this may have to come in the form of an adjustment layer since FCP X masks move with the media. Motion does all of this.

For example a split screen (think of the list below as if they’re actually stacked on the storyline)

    Adjustment Layer (masked left)
    Content
    Adjustment Layer (masked right
    Content

Using the RT Adjustment layers, the top one does not allow me to see the bottom content. In Apple Motion, I’d choose “intersect” as a blending mode to make this happen.

I tried creating my own filter and a title to incorporate this feature, but it hasn’t worked yet. I know I can go the compound clip route and it seems that’s the only option. I am trying to achieve the flexibility of having the mask and content in place on the storyline without having to bounce inside the compound clip (which has it’s own compound clips inside) every time I need to make a position adjustment on the content. Another nice option is if Apple would implement a view in place (like the Video and Audio animation storyline pop-up) for compound clips whereas the elements would expand in your current view.

    Wishful thinking.

Drop zones are one solution, but then I’d have to convert a lot of media to a compound clip and add that to a drop zone. It’s useful for some things, but this method has its limitations that aren’t ideal for scripted narrative which is what I am working on.

Yep, you can do what you want with my cartoon panel masks. You can even turn on a color background. So, for example, you could put a square mask on a clip, move the clip inside the mask. And outside the mask you could change the content to a solid color instead of just transparent. There’s also a custom shape mask that allows you to corner pin any 4 point shape you like. They all have a border on them, but could turn that off in motion.

FWIW here’s a video overview of the mask (panel)

You may want to jump ahead to 7:50 where you see the custom panel shape.
