Hey everyone… we are having a confusing problem at my office. We have 2 computers…

    A:
    4×2.5 GHz Power PC G5
    5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
    256 MB GeForce 6600

    B:
    Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5
    4.5 GB DDR SDRAM
    256 MB ATI Radeon 9650

The problem is that computer A seems to render at about 1/4 the speed of computers B. Could there be some sort of setting that is incorrect on Comp. A? Could this have to do with the difference between DDR and DDR2 RAM? Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

you can determine if it is an ae setting by finding the ae pref files and moving it to the desktops, then testing ae on the 3 computers again… the pref files are in users/username/library/preferences/adobe/afer effects/versionnumber. its called adobe after effects [version] prefs. don’t throw them out, just move them out of that folder. when you open ae a new pref file will be created with the default settings, don’t change them just do a render of the same project on each computer.

if the results are still the same, you should run the disk utility to make sure the hard disk is ok. you should also run the hardware test from the osx install disk (instruction on running the test are printed on the disk). run the extensive test (note, it will take a long time).

if none of that is helping (or giving you any clue to the problem) you’ll need to look at what else might be different on the systems… drive speeds, drive space, other applications, osx version, extra hardware (pci, graphics cards), etc…

You’re our hero. I can’t believe we didn’t think of that. Our test render went from taking 22 minutes to taking 2 minutes just from trashing the preferences. THANKS!

i’m kind of curious what preferences were causing the problem… 22min – 2min…!?? is there a check box for render like it was the mid-90s?

    😉
