I can get 6 hours of wildlife observation by running my camcorder directly into a stand alone recorder and the quality is acceptable for research evaluation. when I pullout about 1.5 hours, eliminating idle time, Vegas gives an error code “video too long”. I’m guessing there is an adjustment to lower video quality to make longer videos. Advice please.

You cannot fit 4.5 hrs of video on a single DVD. You would have to encode at 1.9Mbps. That’s incredibly low and the video would be unwatchable. You need to at least use a Dual Layer DVD. That would get your bit-rate up to 3.7Mbps but a normal DVD is 6Mbps by comparison. Maybe you should just split your project up on several DVD’s.

I realize the quality suffers but it’s still good enough to extract data. I started with VHS long play with an 8 hour span more than 10 years ago, I was able to get bat cave surveillance but the noise of the tape was very bad. With my Phillips stand alone DVD recorder that time was reduced to 6 hours but the digital signal was much cleaner. I was able to use a high frequency mic and a home made transduction amplifier to record bat sounds for the bat conservation association. If you check you will find the Phillips stand alone dvd recorder has a one hour, two hour, 4.5 hour and a 6 hour setting. Like I said the quality suffers but animal count is still quite possible. I am unable to make longer than about 1.25 hours with computer and Vegas. Perhaps there is software better suited to my purpose. Like I mentioned I’m retired so this is all volunteer work which means I pay for my own equipment. I have really made progress with this program and am now doing bat cave video with an overlay of an audacity scan synched to the bat flight video, looks great, thanks a lot for your assistance.

You would have to use Sony DVD Architect. Then you could render a lower quality file with Vegas Pro and author the DVD with DVD Architect.
