Long Rendering Times with Sony Vegas 12 HD Video

Wow really ?
So if thats normal is there anything I can do to speed up rendering times ?
Also then I have to ask how is windows movie maker able to render the same video in at 1-1.5minutes per minute of video ?

I could understand, that type of render time with full color correction, lots of effects, several tracks etc. But for a run of the mill video just combining 20-30 clips that seems just nuts.

Some file encoders are faster than others. Some file encoders generate better quality than others.

Mainconcept AVC is quite slow. You did not mention if you had Mainconcept AVC set for one or two pass. Two pass being twice as long as a one pass encoder.

Sony AVC is about 2x faster than Mainconcept AVC at 1 pass. You might try that one.

One thing that might cut your render time in half is to shoot 30fps instead of 60fps. You have twice as many frames to process… do you really need them? Try Disable Resample on all of your events and see if that speeds things up.

Also does your project properties match your source properties. If not, that will slow things down.

Two pass takes twice as long because it process the video twice. So uncheck the Two Pass option unless you really need it and that will cut your render time in 1/2.

There are two places to turn GPU acceleration on/off. Have you tried keeping in ON for the Timeline (Options | Preferences | Video) but OFF for the Render Template (CPU Only)?

NVIDIA GPU’s don’t work as well as ATI GPU’s with Vegas Pro. One thing you could do is get an ATI GPU.

Is the quality the same? If not, then WMM is trading speed for quality. It could also be that WMM is taking full advantage of your NVIDIA GPU while Vegas Pro is not.

Are you talking about CPU Only renders? Because MainConcept AVC is almost 3.6x faster than Sony AVC with GPU turned on using Open CL with my ATI Radeon HD 5870.

Yes. The OP has a Kepler GPU and the Mainconcept AVC CUDA may not support it well, just like what goes on with newer AMD GPUs and MC AVC OpenCL.

That being considered Sony AVC will be faster than MC AVC since MC AVC will always be CPU at that point. Sony AVC supports newer GPUs fine but it only uses GPU for motion estimation as far as I can tell, so only a small speed boost.

IF MC AVC supports your GPU on CUDA/OpenCL then that should definitely be faster.

Sadly I remember the days when MC AVC OpenCL ran at light speed when I have my AMD 5850 GPU. I now have a 7950 and MC AVC does not support that.

Oh yea, I forgot that MainConcept AVC will only accelerate with older OpenCL cards… that kind of defeats the purpose of using OpenCL in the first place. :/
