I currently use two dsr250’s and a pd150 to record all day seminars for a corporate client. My cameras are beginning to show their age and I was looking for new cameras to replace the ones I currently use. I record normally between 1.5-2 hours of footage before changing tapes. I use FCP 7.0 and would like to speed up my loading process. I mostly shoot SD and occasionally would like to shoot HD. Any suggestions?

All the Panny Cams shoot HD and SD.

You’ll need to invest in some P2 Cards but you can go all day in SD with 3 cards.

Compared to the dsr250 does the picture on the HPX170 comparable in SD ?

For the better part of 2010 we had a 170 and we shot meetings and the like in SD, looked great. DV50 mode and it was every bit as good as past 2/3CCD SD cams. IMO.

The only thing that troubles me about P2 is the number of cards I would need for an all day 2 camera shoot. Those little guys are expensive. I also looked at the Sony NXCAM and although the cards are less expensive, the MPEG format that is used when shooting SD needs to be transcoded before it is imported into FCP.

How much would you spend in tape stock? There is no comparison. P2 will pay for itself in no time.
