Long file names
Posted by Joe Mantaratz on October 18, 2008 at 2:07 amI just came across a bug in Vegas 8.0c. I tried to import photos from an Olympus camera and it crashed the prog every time. The cause was the super long file names it created. I changed them to a shorter version and it worked. Anyone else ever have that problem?

October 18, 2008 at 9:49 pmThis is a limit in Windows. (DOS, actually). The filespec is limited to 132-characters. For example, “C:\windows\programs\filename.txt” is 32 characters. Fortunately, inside windows, all directory names and paths are truncated to the old DOS 8.3 form. For example, the directory “Program Files” will be “progra~1” to the internal O/S. This way, you can have as many as 9 folders between your drive letter and filename.
I haven’t verified it yet, but there is also a limit to any filename or folder name length. I think it’s 64-characters.

October 18, 2008 at 11:50 pmIt has been a few years since I used DOS, (never had a DOS program crash), but I am sure you are correct. The files as named worked in any other program except Vegas 8.0c. It would see them but the moment I clicked to import it would crash. No error message or anything, also the file names were long but not anywhere near 30 characters. There have been other files that have done the same thing but those were MPG video files imported from a camcorder. The camera pics were from a client. All in all the program is great, I just thought this was interesting. Thanks for the reply.

I was very impressed by your creativity in your clips. If you have a chance can you take a look at my posts regarding CPU usage and masking? Thanks again for all the great info you share.
