    Hi Everyone

Here is my dilemma. I have recently become unable to capture clips over 20 minutes length. (Actually :18:52:09) Shorter clips capture perfectly, and the longer clips go through the capture process and seem to capture fine, but when the capture is complete the clip isn’t linked. There is a file created where it should be, but I can’t link to it, it’s about a third the size that I expect it to be and I can’t preview it in Finder like I should be able to do. I always used to be able to capture clips that were several hours long…this just started about a couple weeks ago. The limit capture settings in FCP are turned off btw. It seems to be linked to file size. Any Clip that is :18:52:09 is exactly 4 Gig. so again 4 gig & smaller are Fine, Anything larger doesn’t connect.

I’m running FCP 5 and OSX 10.4 on a G5 dual 2.7. I’m capturing to an XRAID and vaguely remember reading that some setting might interferre with large files (but I think that should be set correctly at the moment). I’m capturing DVCAM footage via firewire and have tried using our Sony DSR-1800 and DSR-45 decks.

Thanks for your help in advance, and let me know if there’s anything else you need to know about my situation.

If you haven’t done so already try trashing your FCP pref. files. Restart FCP and try capturing again.

I’ve done both (repeatedly). I don’t know if this part of the same issue, but we often have issues Exporting self contained QT files. They show up in the finder, but can’t open them and the are a fraction of the size they should be. When trying to open these files we get a General 2048 Error. This error usually shows up with MPEG files (what I’ve learned doing a little research), not genereally QT’s. I’ve reninstalled QT with no help.

Okay. Some other things to check: Make sure that you have journaling turned OFF for all your media hard drives. File journaling interferes with the capture process and should only be turned on for your startup drive. Also make usre you don’t have any virus protection software activated to run automatically in the background. This will also interfere with capturing. I’m sure you already know that your media drives should be formatted in Mac OS extended, but I’m just tying to cover all the bases I can think of. Your statement about only being able to capture up to 4 gigs was a red flag for me in that the maximum file size for a FAT32 formatted disk is the same. But I’m sure your X-RAID is probably okay in that regard because you said that it’s been working fine up until a few weeks ago.

Get a copy of DiskWarrior and run that on all your drives. This will rebuild the directories on everything in case they’ve become corrupted with long term use. Corrupted HD directories will play havoc with programs trying to access files. It’s also good to use for regular preventive maintenance in the future.

Try capturing a bit of footage to another media drive or even to your startup drive, just to try and narrow down the problem. If successful, you may have a problem with your X Serve RAID

There’s a few more things you can try but let me know your thoughts on the above recommendations and post back if you’re still having problems.
