We ran into this this week, and it has us afraid we have mad the biggest mistake.

Capture a solid hour of footage (1 clip)
let it conform (stupid decision by adobe)
put it on the timeline. How long does it take before you can scrub?
make a cut (Ctrl-K) close to the center of the clip. How long does it take before you can scrub the video?

We just installed a blackmagic HD-Pro, and have found the combo of premiere and black magic useless. We had a simple job on Friday. Load a movie, fix a few bad frames, clean up the titles and audio, and output it to tape.

5 hours later we gave up until monday. Everytime we made a cut it took 15 to 20 minutes to before we could do anyting.

I can not beleive that everyone has this problem. Why do we have to conform just captured footage. What the heck is premiere doing in the background after a cut?

Not much info here. What format were you capturing? What are the computer specs? What were you capturing from?
If it’s a normal sort of capture we all know Prem Pro does it well. Have you approached Black Magic to find out the limitations of their card? Are you trying to capture HDV? Have you got the right BM driver?

I capture regularly from extended mini dv 85 mins no problems at all except to avoid the following.

Do not cpature on the fly ie start at the beggining hit record & leave. Invariable when I first installed Prem Pro. I did this & ended up with the conforming files. If you do do this detroy the offending conforming files for that clip. Place the clip on the timeline & it will in aprox 5 mins or so for 85 mins of clip re-conform.

Best is to In & Out your clip & capture for that length not had any problems then with the conforming files.

Using PremPro with Canopus Storm2 for capture. Soon going to Canopu Edius which does not have all these & many more problems.

    Kevin & Laurie,
The common link here is that you both use “capture cards”. Prem Pro is designed around firewire and it’s well documented that most third party capture card suppliers are challenged by driver development, particularly Canopus. Decklink is new to Prem Pro and hopefully they will improve but Canopus has given up driver development and gone home. Normally this wouldn’t matter too much, particularly with DV, but now HDV has hit the scene capture cards are again in focus.
Maybe Prem Pro v2 will have some answers.

All updated premiere and Blackmagic drivers. HP xw8200 dual 3.4 ghz xeon and 3 gig of ram. Capturing SD through SDI. All drivers up to date. BM claims it is adobe’s fault. Why should I have to conform a file I just captured?

Don’t misunderstand me, conforming is a pain in the neck. I would guess it was introduced to overcome audio rendering that was sometimes necessary in earlier versions. If I’m not mistaken we will see audio rendering die a natural (or unnatural) death in the very next version. I think conforming was introduced to assist with audio monitoring – rendering was a post edit performer.
