  • Logging/Capture Scratch Error…

Dear Final Cut Pro Cow Gods –

I keep getting the following error when batch capturing my footage.

“An error occurred finding one or more of the specified capture scratch volume(s). Verify that both audio & video scratch disks are set in the preferences.”

This is what I have been doing –
    1. Setting the scratch disk to my designated hard-drive folder. I notice that enabling “Capturing Audio and Video to separate files” in Scratch Disks also enables by “Audio Capture”. The two cannot be separated.
    2. Always make sure that the clip settings are “Capture: Aud+Vid” “Audio Format: Stereo”
I notice that when this error occurs, when I have the clip settings window up, the
“Audio Format” will change to “Ch.1+Ch.2”
    3. Scrapping preferences. This helps temporarily. I log four clips and the same error message again. Gotta go back and scrap preferences.

I read a previous post that said something about switching on (or off) the audio tracks, “Stereo” vs. “Ch1 & Ch.2”. Where do I do this?

Does clicking or not clicking on “logged clip settings” in the Batch Capture window have anything to do with this?

    Please help!

    Best,

    -J.P.

[J.P.] “”An error occurred finding one or more of the specified capture scratch volume(s). Verify that both audio & video scratch disks are set in the preferences.”

I find that error messages like this can actually be pretty useful if you take them at face value. In this case, FCP is telling you very specifically that it can’t find the disk or folder that you’ve designated.

    Now the question is why???

Is it, perhaps, that you’ve got a “/” in your clipname? 9 times out of 10, that’s the cause.

In Unix (OS X is, after all, Unix), a “/” in a file name means the part in front is a directory or folder. If you try to name a clip “Interview/Bob Smith”, FCP will try to find a folder named Interview, so that it can place a clip named Bob Smith in it. You can work around that by changing your clip name to “Interview-Bob Smith”, or “Interview_Bob Smith”.
