  • Logging or Translation Software?

Posted by Chris Parkhurst on January 5, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Anyone know of any existing app or software for Logging footage? I’m looking for something a bit more robust than the regular logging and capturing feature that FCP has.

I’d love for the ability to be able to construct some sort of document with key words for dialogue or shots that I liked. And then later on I could do an easy search with the word or phrase and it would tell me what reel and timecode that had the piece of footage that I was looking for. Is there any outside software or anything that works directly with FCP to achieve this?

In advance, thanks for your consideration!

Thanks, Shane! Anyone know of any plug-ins for logging that works directly with FCP?

You’re good, Shane. And fast. Thanks for the prompt replies!

Here’s the thing. Both of these applications seem pretty damn good, and quite robust, but I don’t know any freelancers that are using them. I think that people might be scared to plop down the big bucks for such a massive program, when they really only need a few of the things that are offered with the program. It seems like a great idea for a post production house, but I’m not sure it would be for the smaller, independent editor. I am still looking for something maybe a little more streamlined and that would be a plug-in of sorts for FCP, but haven’t located that, yet.

    Any other ideas, anyone?

    (Thanks again, Shane.)

    Dude,

You just got the two best suggestions from Shane. Too expensivie? You can get a version of CATdv for less than $100 bucks. It sounds like you really just want something for free.

Both suggestions given are wonderful solutions and work great with FCP,
but for a smaller operation CatDV would be best.

They are more than worth the price and I’m not sure how you could sell
    something for much cheaper!

About as cheap as they come. Great for logging interviews and shot notes.
