  • Log & Transfer: filename length limitations

    Hello:

A couple of days ago a colleague was trying to import clips from a P2 card using Log & Transfer. She opened the folder with the P2 files, renamed each of the clips, tried to import them… and found out that half of them didn’t get imported, with a red warning sign and an “unknown error” message as the only clue. After much fiddling, my colleague finally found out that, if she renamed the problematic clips to a shorter name, she could import them successfully (she was originally giving them names of around 20-25 characters).

My question is: is this a documented bug? Is the filename length the actual cause of the problems we had, or is there something else to this? And could Apple possibly add error messages even *less* helpful than “unknown error”, so that us working editors can waste even more of our time troubleshooting in the dark?

All OSs are full of uselss errors. ONe of my favorite, from FCP is: “error, something happened.” I mean, what programmer thought of THAT?

Anyway. Long file names are an issue with the OS. When you import and change the name, that is the name that gets stuck on the imported file, therefore there is a limit. It is wise to keep file names small anyway. BUT, if you put a smaller name on it first, you can make it however log you want in the Browser.

How big will your bin windows have to be to see the name? too big….for me. IMHO.

Well, yes, but the thing is that I have used clips with much longer filenames than the ones my colleague was using, and I’ve never had a problem. Then again, I captured those clips from tape, using Log & Capture. I’ve been searching around here and haven’t found anyone else complaining about this bug either. Can anyone confirm if Log & Transfer has indeed problems with long clip names?
