Log & Transfer doesn’t read specific .mxf file from P2 card
Posted by Joe Chow on February 19, 2011 at 9:21 pmI’m happily using Log & Transfer to import footage from a P2 card when I realize there are 2 missing clips. I search for them in the Card folder and I can see 2 clip numbers in both the Video and Audio folders that haven’t been transferred, but they are not showing up in the Log & Transfer window. How do I access these 2 clips?

February 19, 2011 at 11:50 pmThose numbers were most likely skipped because they were SPANNED files. Meaning the second part of another clip. See, P2 has a 4GB file size limit, so if you shoot a long take, the shot will be split into more than one file. But, when you use FCP to Log and Transfer, it stitches together those files…and will only show you the number of the first file in the sequence.
FOr example, if a shot started on clip 0004GHX, and encompassed 0005YU5 and 0006IWQ, you will only see 0004GHX in Log and transfer. The other clips were rolled into that one shot.
Look at the footage…is anything missing? If not, this is the case.

February 20, 2011 at 2:03 amYou’re right, Shane. It was a spanned clip. I know they exist, but hadn’t encountered them quite this way before, since I see “partial span” showing up in clip #s all the time. Also, this project came with an extremely convoluted workflow, but that’s another story. Thanks for the help.

June 19, 2011 at 12:03 pmShane, I’ve just discovered and learned the same thing about spanned files after pulling my hair out trying to figure out why there are more MXF files in my folder than appear in Log & Transfer.
Thank you. Now I get it. However, this leads me to a follow up question. Is there a key indicator/ID of sorts in FCP that identifies a file as being spanned?
My concern here is, I am working with unfamiliar media from the client and thus I cannot view the material and confirm all MXF files are being loaded and seen by Log & Transfer to be ingested.
Or based on the fundamentals of the MXF directory structures, is it even possible for an individual MXF file to be ignored/unseen by Log & Transfer?

In Log and Transfer, it will say SPANNED next to the clip name.

If they are part of a span? No. Well, actually no to everything, unless the card structure is incomplete.

June 19, 2011 at 8:43 pmOkay, thanks for the reply. So I will continue with the knowledge that if FC can see the directory and displays files for any particular directory group, then it is displaying all of the available media within, whether single files, or paired as spanned files.
Thanks
