I’m preparing to log and transfer AVCHD footage from my Panasonic HDC-SD9 via firewire into FCP 6. From reading prior Cow posts (thanks for the great education!), it seems the best way is to transcode to Pro Res on the ingest. My scratch disk is an HDOne, so drive speed is not a problem. I’ve got hours of footage, and I’m a FCP newbie, so want to double check my setup. Is there any problem with using the easy setup and selecting Apple Pro Res & HDC-SD9 as my settings? Does this setup alone trigger Compressor and the transcoding to Pro Res or are there any other settings I need to change? My output will be to DVD and the web.

Thanks for helping a first timer. I lurked on the forums for weeks at a time researching before I spent $$ on gear. You guys are amazing!

    Deb,

A few things with regards to Log and Transfer:

Your camera requires USB interfacing, not firewire ;). In fact to the best of my knowledge all AVCHD cameras use USB connectivity. You can also use a USB card reader.

As far as Log and Transfer/ProRes Transcoding – this all takes place within the Log and Transfer window. There is no direct interaction with Compressor.

Open Gear Pulldown (top-middle of UI) for transcode Preferences. Set your ProRes version here. You can manually add volumes using the top left Add Volume button. That’s about it.

Have a look at this thread. You may find this workflow interesting …

    Paul,

Thanks for your help. I read the thread on the alternate workflow as well. I currently have FCP 6, so only can choose Apple Pro Res or Apple Intermediate codec on the UI for transcoding AVCHD media.

    Appreciate the quick feedback.
