  • Log-Lin LUTs vs ARRI LOG-c LUT’s

I’ve noticed anytime asks for a log-lin lut on the forum, they’re immediately pointed to the ARRI generator. I’m very confused by this consistent agreement.

My assumption was that the Log-C lut was specific to the Alexa (in fact specific to the firmware version of the Alexa). It exhibits a unique (and very saturated) color matrix for that camera. Whereas a log-lin lut should theoretically be nothing more than a black point, white point, and gamma value.
Yes I’ve used the Log-c LUT for film scans, but I still can’t imagine thats the best tool for the job.

    Am I mistaken here?

While I’m at it, does anyone have a proper log-lin LUT they could post?

The Arri LUT generator allows you to either include a color matrix or not, it’s a user choice. This allows you to builld a LUT that can be used with Redlogfilm footage, for instnce. The Log C curve, while not completely identical to cineon, is close enough to use for almost all images coded to the Cineon standard. The reason I and others point users to the Arri site is because its the easiest and quickest way we know of to get a LUT in almost any required format, with or without the Arri color matrix, and in either direction (I.e., log to Lin or Lin to log). It’s a great resource whether you happen to be dealing with Alexa footage or not.

A definitive answer if I’ve heard one. Thanks Mike.
