  • Log and Transfer Resize?

I read over at reduser.net that you can resize REDcode 4K or 2K footage to 1920X1080 while transcoding to ProRes using Log and Transfer in FCP. I didn’t think this was possible and I can’t seem to get anyone over there to elaborate. If this is true it would solve a whole lot of problems for me. Did the poster get it wrong? If not, how do you do it?

You can only do that if the footage was shot at 4k HD or 2k HD. You’ll end up with 1920×1080 that way.

    Hi Russel,

When I shoot 2kHD with the RED camera my (RECODE R3D) images are 2048X1152. When I transcode them to Prores using L&T I get 2048X1152 Prores files not 1920X1080. Am I doing something wrong?

Just for clarification, are you shooting 4K 16×9 or 4K HD?

    Thanks,

    I’m shooting 2K 16X9. Maybe it’s just the 4KHD mode that transcodes to 1080 in L&T?

16×9 still uses the 4096/2048 base. The HD setting uses 3840/1080 base. All Log and Transfer does is cut the 4k value in half. Check out the FCStudio whitepaper on RED’s support site for more info.

OK just to be clear. If I shoot 2k at 2048X1152 then I can’t get that to resize to 1920×1080 in L&T. It’s only if I shoot 4KHD that I can take advantage of Prores’ ability to half the size?

    That should be right.
