Log and Transfer “Error: Unknown” [P2 files]
Posted by Jason Williams on December 14, 2008 at 3:21 amHello,
I’m reading various posts on Creative Cow and Apple’s forum and have not found the remedy. I am using the Log and Transfer and get the Error: Unknown” for some clips. All media is in a ‘contents’ folder with the LASTCLIP.TXT file under it. The bulk of the media transfers perfectly, but a few (spanned) and un-spanned clips do not work. I restarted the computer. I trashed FCP preferences. “Perian” is not installed as other posts mentioned.

December 14, 2008 at 4:47 am#36 – One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane’s Stock Answer #36 – “One or more clips failed to import…”
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don’t like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)…the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window…is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO…in the P2 Import window…in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO…make sure your file names aren’t too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.

December 23, 2008 at 3:11 am1) The video file is there. All the ‘clips’, ‘audio’, ‘icon’, and ‘video’ numbers look to be there. I didn’t delete clips in the field.
2) The video plays correctly in the ‘Log and Transfer’ viewer and independently in Quicktime. It just doesn’t transfer into FCP.
3) I unchecked the ‘Remove Pulldown’. One of the clips worked correctly for importing. Others are still non-transferable.
4) I started using one word names to just get them into FCP. Then I would rename.

December 29, 2008 at 4:35 pmHi,
Here is the remedy to the problem I received from other advice.
This is my process that fixed the non-transferable video:
1) All the media needed to be transferred back in to the hard drive. I attempted to only transfer the media clips with errors.
2) I used the ‘Repair Clip’ feature for the clips with errors. This resulted in new file names and sometimes the clips were slightly changed in length because the spanned media clips were grabbing information from different bits of media.
3) I re-organized the P2 media in the hard drive.
4) I was able to delete the media I didn’t need to fix. Thus the result was I only needed to re-capture a few clips into the FCP environment.
Thanks for the suggestion.

January 26, 2009 at 1:45 pmI’m having the same problem only I don’t own the camera, p2 cards, or firestore. My camera guy brought all of the equipment, shot the film, transferred it to hard drives. Then, off to Canada he went.
Is the “repair clip” option in FCP? Any other assistant you may provide will be greatly appreciated.

January 26, 2009 at 4:05 pmHi,
I don’t have a fix in FCP for your problem. It seems to be internally dependent on the Firestore system. It happens a lot with the drive. I think it has to do with the media drive randomly putting clips out of order. Some times the clips are not in the same order as shot, but everything is stored in the drive for transfer. I recommend renting a Firestore and then fixing all clips as necessary. The one day rental of a drive can save a lot of headache.
I hope that helps.

June 1, 2009 at 1:45 amDoes it need to be a Firestore FS-100 or it can be repaired on a P2 card? My clips were shots on an FS-100…

June 1, 2009 at 11:21 pmHi,
I did some tests with P2 cards and I was not able to fix the clips. I suggest the drive. It also turned out that the drive eventually failed. You may be using a bad Firestore drive creating the clips.
Good luck,
