Log and Transfer creates a recurring twitch/jump in my footage
I’ve shot with this hard disk recorder Sony HD Handycam a million times using all the same settings that we are using now and the log and transfer process has been smooth. Now when I transfer the clips into the project, the footage ‘leaps’ every second or so. We’ve played with the capture preset and tried it at both 1080p30 and 1080pA24 but neither gets rid of the twitchy behavior. The clips play smoothly in the preview window of the log + capture box. They only look messed up when they become part of the project. Any ideas what this could be?

Sounds like you have a frame rate mismatch.
What’s the frame rate your footage and what’s the frame rate of your sequence?

The captured clip is at 29.97fps, pro res 422. The sequences are at 23.98 but I see the leaping when I play it in the viewer, before the clip ever reaches the sequence. The camera shoots at 30fps, I believe, and my capture compression preset is DVCPRO HD 1080p30.

Make a brand new sequence, put one of clips in there and hit yes when FCP asks you if it’s okay to chnage the sequence settings. Then playback that clip. What do you see?

What frame rate does that new sequence say? YOu said you logged and tranferred this footage? Or Logged and capture through a capture card?

The frame rate of the sequence setting that conformed to the clip is now 29.97 fps. Compressor Apple Prores422.
I pulled them in from the camera using Log + Transfer.

Hmm. i was unaware that you could do this with a Sony handicam, but then again I’ve never done it.
Do you have a capture card? Can you go through frame by frame and detect any pulldown on an interlaced monitor?

I don’t have a capture card. It’s always worked flawlessly with the whole Log + Transfer rigamarole.
When I go through frame by frame the jump doesn’t look like pulldown distortion. It literally looks like a non-sequential frame was inserted from a nearby portion of the clip and then it goes back to normal frame sequence. Nothing is actually distorted though.
I wonder who the culprit is — FCP, the camera or me?

Did you recently upgraded your QT and/or iTunes?
QT 7.5.5 broke our Log and Capture. It does the same thing for HDV/M2T files.

Am I correct in assuming you Sony HD Handycam records in the AVCHD codec?
Apparently something with the AVCHD transcoding to ProRes in FCP got damaged with the Mac OS X 10.5.5 and/or QuickTime 7.5.5 updates.
As far as we can tell, this issue affects only Mac Pros and the issue is not occuring in iMovie ’08 (which transcodes to the AIC codec). I’ve sent Apple’s FCP development team an e-mail. However, I’m stuck without being able to do anything with my footage from two cameras. I have yet to try FCP on my MacBook Pro, but I’ve heard it works.
