I would like to set up my FCP 7 to transcode some files. Unfortunately, every time I open Log and Transfer, the program begins to load a different (large volume). I’ve seen this before, and I believe that it usually crashes the program because the volume is too large (sometimes it is an entire drive).

Typically, I would cancel the “add” and just add my new folder, but that doesn’t seem to be working. Is there any way for me to designate the folder from which I am transferring the files before opening Log and Transfer?

Log and Transfer would only automatically detect tapeless media…P2, SxS…the main cards, not the backups…when initially launched. Unless it was closed BEFORE you ejected all the media you used last time you had it open. If you don’t do that, L&T tries to open all that media again. The best thing would be to remove that media, or move it to a different location. Ideally you should have your tapeless media located on a separate drive from your system drive, so you can disconnect it. If it is a secondary internal, then just EJECT it. Launch L&T. Then direct it to the folder you want.
