log and transfer – AVCHD Sony HDR-SR12 in/out issue

I use the Sony Sr12 to shoot import the video with USB connect directly into iMovie 08 and then just import the HD footage into FCE and edit away no problem. Here is an example of what I uploaded to youtube in HD:

I am running Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 and have this issue when using the log and transfer window:

the cursor will not stay in place at intermittent times. when I am able to create in/out points it works perfectly. However, at times the cursor will begin to automatically move to the end of the capture window timeline and stay there. It tries to playback at the position I attempted to set an in point, then either returns to the very start and begins playing or moves to the very end. I notice that my timecode counter also stops playing, only showing the full duration of the entire clip. this happens regardless if I have dumped my footage off of the camera or trying to log/capture from the camera itself via usb. many thanks!

I’m having the exact same issue as Paul. I’ve also had success with his workaround of inputting the in/out points manually, but it is really a pain. Any better solutions to this problem?

Hi,

I am now experiencing a very annoying problem with my Sony HDR-SR12. I am in a rock band and have recorded several concerts with this camera, as I love its ability to record long stretches of footage at a time (e.g. 4+ hours of HD). However, the past few shows I have attempted to record have ended with me walking up the camera after the show only to find it has somehow turned itself over to “DEMO MODE” (this appears on the LCD screen) and after reviewing the footage on the hard drive only about 1 minute of the concert was recorded. I have tried different mic level settings (I wish this camera had a manual audio level adjustment!), the 5.1 vs 2 channel audio option… I was wondering if the loud sound levels were causing this? Anyone else had this issue? Please advise.

This is a response to the entire thread here.

All of these issues drive me nuts, too, and it’s not just this camera. Plenty have only USB with no way to get usable video out without great hassle, and significant time for conversion/transcoding.

I’ve figured only one way to save the actual raw data in a way that will enable log and transfer with FCP later:

With your camera mounted as a drive on your desktop via USB, go into OS-X Disk Utility and create a disk image of the disk/device. In this way, you can basically archive your raw data directly to a drive, with the file structure needed for FCP log and transfer at your convenience.

This may help when your camera is full and you don’t have time for hours of log and transfer conversion. Mainly, it saves a helluva lot of space and time, if all you need to do immediately is save everything for later editing.

Archiving the disk image to a fast external drive (faster than USB 2.0) may speed up log and transfer process, too.

Please let me know if there’s an easier way to save the raw, compressed data for later use with FCP or general archiving.

Im having problems with getting the HDR SR12 connected to final cut pro

I have final cut pro 7 but the camera does not come uo under the log and transfer tab

when i try to import the files it just says that the file structure is unsupported

Do you have any recommendations???
