  • Log and Capture window FREAKOUT!! Help needed.

note: also posted on LAFCPUG, so apologies if you’re seeing this twice 🙂

    Hey everyone,

It’s been a while since I’ve been on here. I have been busy working on cutting a new feature, but have now run into some issues…

    My system:
Kona 3 w/ breakout box using HDSDI in
    Sony J-H3 HDCAM (capturing 23.98psf source @ 1080)
    Mac Pro quad 3.0
G-Speed 3TB RAID via fibre channel
    FCP 5.1

    The problem:
We just finished our reshoots and I came in today to start logging the footage (~7h). I get the deck hooked back up and open up log and capture only to see this crazy flashing preview window greet me. It looks like in the upper left hand of frame as I’m playing back I can see the footage from the deck, but then there is a pink bar across the bottom and apparently some other footage from my project all jumbled and flickering (pic attached). It’s VERY strange.

I did the usual troubleshooting, checking framerate of deck, checking cables, started new project, trashed preferences, restarted machine and nothing. Every time i open log and capture it is freaking out. The picture on my preview monitor coming straight composite out of the deck is fine so I know the tape and deck are working together quite nicely. I tried a test capture but the footage I get is the same as the preview window, a jumbled mess.

Anyone out there seen this before?

Just FYI, what I can make out from knowing the footage is that there are at least two shots just from my capture scratch the log and capture window is previewing. One of the back of a car and the other is interview type footage… coincidently from a scene that I recently output for the web. When I try to capture (i.e. have a signal coming from the deck) this is displayed in the upper left but also jumbled and flickering.

Looks like you have the wrong easy setup enabled.

    Do you have trisync?

What is you reference set to in your Kona Control Panel?

    Hi Jeremy,

I will take a look tomorrow morning and get back to you… I’m pretty sure that I’m using the AJA KONA DVCPRO 23.98 easy setup but you never know. Thanks for the lead.

Yeah, is that 720p or 1080 Psf? Double check.

If you don’t have a tri-sync source for 24fps, change the deck to run at 23.98fps and put the Kona reference to free run n the control panel and it should lock to the incoming video rather than your 29.97 reference to it. The Kona will “freakout” of it’s getting a 23.98 source with a 29.98 reference signal.
Also make sure that you are actually using the correct easy setup for your footage.
    Just a thought…

[Tom Matthies] “Kona reference to free run n the control panel”

    Don’t you mean ‘video in’?

    Oops!
Yes, I meant the “video In” button not the “Freerun” button.
    Gotta get some sleep someday…yawn.
