I have a problem with my log and capture window and was wondering if anyone can help. Heres my problem….

When I connect my HD Camera through firewire for log and capture running on HDV Apple Intermediate Codec, the window doesn’t open when I press cmd 8 or when I selected it from the menu. Instead just a mini window appears just asking for the name of the clip and to capture.

Can anyone direct me in a way that could lead me to getting my full log and capture window back?

    Thank you. =]

Don’t use the AIC codec as your capture preset and you’ll be a happy camper… Quite frankly, using AIC will lower the quality of your video beyond what’s acceptable to most. ProRes will blow the doors off it. Even ProRes LT is better. (you need FCP 7 for LT, but FCP 6 will capture HDV as ProRes 4:2:2 or ProRes HQ 4:2:2.

This is also the case when you capture HDV to ProRes. Not sure why there is no batch window, but my best guess would be because of timecode issues with transcoding from the mpeg2 codec into an Iframe codec.

Unfortunately, you either have to capture the entire tape or log your shots before hand and capture clips manually then adjust the clips.

I’ll take the inconvenience of capturing the entire tape for the ease of editing with a ProRes workflow.

    Thanks for feedback.
One more question, is there another way to change the log and capture settings?
The only way I know is on the log andcapture window and that wont open for me. =( haha

    Thanks man,
    Two questions.
    1. My final cut version is 5, and i dont think ProRes is included? Whats a step down?
    2. Is there another way to change log and capture settings? The only way i know is to open the log and capture window and like i said before, mine doesnt open…

    Thanks! =]

For a measly 300 bucks you could upgrade to FCS (2009) QUANTUM leaps in value. You get Color for starters… that software sold for $25,000 before Apple through it in FCS 2 for nada… it’s wonderful for most every project too.

Do it if you’re on an intel Mac… it’s a no brainer buy.

If this isn’t an option, then capture the HDV natively, then just work with it, or if it’s too cumbersome for your system, transcode it to DVCPROHD using a batch export from FCP, or Compressor. It’s better than the AIC, but not as good as ProRes. I actually wrote an article on this procedure:

Yes, you can change the capture settings in the Audio/Video settings in FCP found in the FCP menu… but it can’t be used to capture HDV as DVCPROHD through firewire.
