  • Log and capture issues with Canon Vixia HV30?

Posted by Tim Biancalana on July 21, 2009 at 5:00 am

I am running FCP 6 on a G5 (dual core) and I am running FCP 5 on a MacBook Pro.
    I recently bought a prosumer HD camera – a Canon Vixia HV30.
It will not allow me to log & Capture on either computer via Firewire connection. What’s very odd is that I DID successfully upload footage with this camera a week ago, and when I went to upload the second tape minutes later, (identical brand, shot in HD with the same camera) it wouldn’t see the device. It’s been that way ever since. There was no physical outside factor to cause this. I have been getting messages that say, “device not found”. or “Missing Digital…”

No image plays in the capture window, even in “non-controllable” device.

I have now used three different firewire patch cords, so all three cannot be bad. Also, the firewire ports work fine with other devices such as midi keyboards, and external hard drives, so rule that out.
It gets stranger yet, the 20 year vet. editor I have been working with exhausted all possibilities trying to get my computers to see it. However we then tried it on his G5 (some two hours away) and it works fine on his system. I need to upload it on my computer not his.

What’s an even bigger mystery is that it was suggested to try iMovie and guess what? I have the same problem. Is there a ghost in my machine(s)?

Please help, I’m a desperate newbie.

It could be that FCP 6 is meant for an Intel-based MacPro, and not a PPC based G5.

I found that when I switched to MacPro, I had to upgrade FCP to 6. The FCP did work on G5, but it was very quirky.

But I have always had log and capture problems with FCP. I am submitting my own post on this in just a minute.

Thanks Richard. Ah that it could only be that simple. I also have version 5.0 on my MACBOOK Pro and it won’t take it there either. I went to the APPLE Store and logged this very same camera on their new MACBOOK Pro to AND to iMovie without a problem. I cannot get iMovie in my G4 Tower or MACBOOK Pro to see this camera. Also, I cannot get either one to see my editor’s $3000 pro camera! This is strange stuff. Remember my firewire ports work fine and accept hard drives, midi keyboards and so forth so that’s not the issue. This is a real mystery. I did have log and capture issues before, but it would work and then not work. For example last month I successfully logged a tape, put the next tape in the camera, shut the housing, hit “Log and capture” and from then on it has not recognized the device. Huh?!!

    Hi Tim,
I don’t know if you saw my post on this from a couple hours ago. My Canon Vixia is recognized
by the MacPro, The Vixia displays that it is, in fact, connected. iMovie will import from it easily, but
FCP can’t and won’t see it at all?

I have one more thing to try: The mini HDV cartridge I recorded some HD footage BUT I also
dubbed down some VHS tapes which came in as 12bit DV… I am wondering if by mixing up the source data like that maybe I am confusing FCP… Will try another tape.

Good luck! I suppose you tried all the zapping PRAM and throwing away Prefs, and so on…
