  • Log and capture in mono only!

I can log and capture from SD miniDV in Imovie just fine, but in FCP , the audio of the same footage gets converted to mono. Something in FCP is forcing my stereo audio into mono, and I don’t know why or what to do to reset it back to stereo. In the capture window, the clip settings input channel setting of 2 is greyed out and won’t let me modify it.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
    or
    https://pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/

This is one FCP tip that has helped in solving hundreds of “odd” problems.

That you are using an stereo microphones doesn’t mean that you are recording an stereo pair. You are recording two mono channels. Set the two channels ind your time-line and pan one to the right and one to the left.

[rafalaos] “Set the two channels ind your time-line and pan one to the right and one to the left.

[mpxxxxx] “In the capture window, the clip settings input channel setting of 2 is greyed out and won’t let me modify it.

That indicates a different kind of problem.

    Hi Matte,
When capturing via FireWire, the setting is grayed because there is not way to capture nothing different than two mono channels.
mpxxxx have been always capturing two mono channels, that in iMovie probably works like an stereo pair. But have a look in the Capture setups and tell me if you see somewhere the option to capture stereo.
Cameras do not record stereo. You make the stero after in postpo mixing the two channels and exporting a stereo pair.
