  • Loading fonts without restarting?

Posted by Ben Black on November 15, 2010 at 10:47 am

    Hi,

When I’m working in illustrator and install a new font into Font Book I have to restart Illustrator in order to see that font. Is there a way of refreshing Illustrators font list without having to quit then restart it?
I’m working in CS4 but also have CS5.

    Thanks,
    Ben

No. This is common to all software.

Yes, this software allows you to either ‘install’ or ‘load’ a font (or multiple fonts) on the fly.

When you choose to ‘install’ the font(s), it means that they will be permanently available in your system, even after restart.

When you choose to ‘load’ the font(s), they get immediately loaded to the system ram and will be available instantly in all your apps, even if they are currently open.

One drawback, is that you have to be on Windows. 🙂

    Thanks for the replys guys.

Unfortunately im on mac so can’t use that software. I just
thought seeing as Photoshop now loads them in straight away Illustrator might be able to too.
I have noticed that certain fonts do come up without having to restart. Not sure why some do
    and some don’t?

Not sure if you tried, but after you load the font, select the text in AI and select a different font from what you loaded and make sure the selected text reflects that change. Then switch to the font you loaded.

This works on the PC but not sure if it works on the Mac.

I found that it works if you go to the Character Panel, bring up the menu and choose “Reset Panel”.

If you type in the name of the new font instead of clicking for it, it may let you. It has worked many times for me but every once in a while it won’t. No idea why.
