I am passing along my Mac running OSX 10.3.9 on a dual 500 MHz Power PC G4 with 768 MB of SDRAM and currently running FCP 4.5 to my son as I upgrade to a Mac Pro. I, like most fathers, want my son to get the most out of any gift I give him.
With that in mind I am wondering. I purchased some time ago FCP 5.0 and never loaded it onto this system because I was told my platform could not handle the upgrade. I have now read the “before you install” document on the first FCP disk and it seems to me that I could load FCP 5 and Soundtrak Pro on this system. Is that correct? Would it be a benefit to my son? Would it be possible to load the other software on this system?
Or, should I just stick with the FCP 4.5. I have run this setup for over a year without a hitch. It is very stable albiet outdated.
Thank you so much for your opinions and suggestions. My son will recognize you when he accepts his first Oscar for editing. Just kidding. Really, thanks so much.

[Frank Cervarich] “Would it be possible to load the other software on this system? “

It’s been a while but my G4 dual 450 was buggy with soundtrack. DVDSP and Motion are the big problems which benifitted with the G5 processors. 2 gigs of ram are recommended. Also the graphics cards held you back.

If you are going to try ver.5 do it now before he starts a project.

Search the archives for that time span but probably dvdsp3 and motion are not recomended for your system.

Just got off the phone with Apple folks and it appears that this system will handle FCP 5. Only problem I have is making sure that I have the right card, according to them. They tell me I need an AGP card. I am looking at my original quotation and I read – ATI Rage 128Bit/AGP 2X Graphic accelerator card with 32-bit-color & advanced 3-D features.’ Will that allow me to set up my son with FCP5 assuming my G4 meets all the other criteria?
