Loaded DV NTSC tapes on a DSR-11 with the PAL switch selected
Hi,
Please pardon my ignorance, but I have a question. I’m working on a DV NTSC project on Final Cut 5.1.2, and four mini DV NTSC tapes were loaded last night via firewire on a DSR-11 with the PAL switch mistakenly selected. However, when I cut them into the NTSV DV timeline (720×480, 48k), they don’t need to be rendered and they look and sound okay. Does the firewire cable ignore the setting on the deck, or is there something I’m missing and these tapes need to be re-loaded correctly.

Select one and type cmd+9… see if indeed it’s NTSC. I’ll bet it is though, and if so you are good to edit sans recapture.
I think the switch on the back only affects RECORDING not playback.

I think you’re right – might only be for recording. I think the deck “knows” what format the tape is for playback.

Thanks guys – good to know – I just checked a few of the clips and they are indeed NTSC. I appreciate your help.

FYI
the DSR-11 will auto select the format for playback through the DV connector automatically and display the type on the front panel. Check your timecode though because with the pal switch on the back set to pal it records non drop frame T/C. This will over ride the menu settings for the T/C generator.
