I am recording/videotaping some live events at a high school in house theater performance and also at a small professional theater production house. Also, at times I videotape in a high school gymnasium. You know, the loud stuff…pep band, hundreds of screaming teenagers, etc. Anyone doing this? I am thinking of getting two good quality XLR shotgun mic.s to put in place for stereo pick up. Suggestons for these two different venues? I shoot with Canon XL2’s and can go wireless or not, and have a portable mixer to bring the feeds direct to the camera. Thanks!

shotguns arent ideal in this situation. get a feed from the soundboard and supplement with mics close to the stage. Remember sound travels slowly – there can be a noticeable lag between the feed from the board and the sound recorded at the back of the auditorium.
