Live Menu
Posted by Chris Balogh on March 13, 2009 at 3:58 pmI have a dvd that I am producing where live video runs for about 2-3 minutes (actual dialogue, purely a scene) and at the end of the scene a door closes. I want that door to become the menu for the dvd with chapter selections and what not. On the door a sign hangs which I want to be swinging the whole time as a loop….any suggestions on how I do this? With after effects?

March 13, 2009 at 4:42 pm1. Render out a still image of the frame once the door is closed.
2. In Photoshop, open the still image use the clone stamp to create a version of the door with no sign on it.
3. Back in AE, use the “sign-free” door as a background layer
4. Drop a copy of the door footage on top of that, and use a mask to hide everything but the sign swinging.
– OR –
Use PS to create a still of the sign, and then animate it (move anchor point to top, animate the rotation property) on top of the still image of the door.Probably other, better ways also.
Good luck!

March 13, 2009 at 4:47 pmThanks nate. Let me elaborate a little more on what I want to do:
Beginning of dvd is a scene from the video and the scene ends with the door slamming and a sign. The door then becomes the menu where it is looped of the sign swaying back and forth. Then there will be chapter selection buttons under it leading to the actual whole video. Sorry never done a menu such as this before.
So how would I go about doing this?
Thanks for all the help.

March 13, 2009 at 5:01 pmHey Chris,
I guess I was just explaining how to achieve the video effect inside of After Effects. If you are looking for a How To on the whole DVD process I’m not sure I can help.
I’ve done this sort of thing a couple of times in DVD Studio Pro (sort of). Is that the software you are using? Or are you using the Adobe DVD software?

March 13, 2009 at 5:52 pmOk, here’s my best shot:
1) Design the door with swinging sign video in AE(refer to my earlier post) and animate that for about 30 seconds.
2) Bring your “scene” into DVDSP and drag that to Track 1. Right click on track 1 in the Graphical view and choose First Play (you should see a disk icon show up on the track 1 graphic).
3) Now open the menu editor and drag the animated “door with swinging sign” to the menu.
4) Add whatever buttons and text you want to the menu
5) Link all the buttons and link the scene so it goes to the menu when it finishes. What you should end up with when you put the DVD in to play is:
1) Your scene plays out until the door slams
2) The AE animation of the door with swinging sign takes over for 30 seconds while menu buttons and text appear and become clickable
3) The door animation will loop back and start over every 30 seconds (not the scene, just the door video).Nate Hanson

March 14, 2009 at 4:17 amYou’d create an additional menu that comes up at the end of the previous clip. This “linking” is done through your favorite DVD authoring program.

March 14, 2009 at 11:17 amJust a quick note on video looping – make sure your key frames are positioned properly. Obviously the last key frame and the first key frame should be the same, but the last keyframe should be positioned one frame after the end of the comp.
This is obvious when you think of it, if your last frame has a value of 20 and the first frame has a value of twenty that’s two consecutive ’20’ frames. There’ll be a slight blip in the smoothness of the loop, which is always irritating. But if the last key frame is one frame further then the last frame of the comp, the last frame expects 20 to be the next frame – which it is making it seamless!
